On Feb 26 Islamic reverts were invited to a special community iftar hosted by the Muslim Women’s Coalition.

The Muslim Women’s Coalition (MWC) hosted their “Annual Revert Iftar” at Melrose Restaurant in Oak Creek for more than 150 guests. The atmosphere at the iftar was warm, welcoming and deeply uplifting for the 40 reverts, including their friends and family. The intention of the gathering was to create a sense of belonging especially for reverts who are the only Muslims in their families.

Melrose Restaurant was recently purchased by a Palestinian family that expanded its space to include Milwaukee’s second Haraz Coffee shop, making the location ideal for a large event.

Guests were greeted with smiles and Ramadan gift bags by the MWC team. MWC board members donated raffle items. The iftar was generously sponsored by MWC Board Member, Nadia Alkhun and Ahed Obiedat, M.D., Ph.D.

There were heartfelt conversations and dialogue about finding common ground with others who shared similar journeys to Islam. Some attendees brought family members who were curious to experience an iftar, adding to the spirit of openness and understanding that filled the room.

Initiating the iftar was a call to prayer. Guests enjoyed an extensive buffet of Palestinian dishes and desserts. MWC Executive Director, Janan Najeeb, gave a short talk on the concept of gratefulness for God’s immense blessings, especially the blessing of faith.

Najeeb emphasized the importance of being kind and patient with yourself and others as reverts learn a new way of life. Many of the revert attendees have been members of the community for years while others were there for the first time.

There was a raffle that gave attendees the chance to win special gifts, which brought plenty of cheers and anticipation as the winners were announced. By the end of the night, what began as a simple iftar became a memorable celebration of faith, community and support—reminding everyone that even those who may be the only Muslims in their families are never truly alone.
